Located at the heart of Adelaide, South Australia, Adelaide Convention Centre is one of the world’s most modern, versatile and technologically advanced meetings and events venues. Each year, Adelaide Convention Centre plays host to more than 700 events, welcoming in excess of 300,000 visitors through its doors. In addition to being known for its culinary journey and extraordinary productions, the venue is renowned as a global leader in sustainability. In fact, Adelaide Convention Centre is the world’s first convention centre to achieve EarthCheck Master certification, representing more than 15 years’ best practice in business, social and environmental sustainability.
The Green Solution
Adelaide Convention Centre is committed to the Australian Government target of halving food waste by 2030. The venue addresses food waste through a prioritisation method, which targets the avoidance, repurposing and recycling of food waste.
To date, Adelaide Convention Centre has proudly achieved a 99% diversion from landfill rate, with a target of 100% of organics diverted from landfill by 2026. By avoiding, repurposing and recycling food waste, Adelaide Convention Centre is helping ensure that any food waste produced by the venue is valorised, converted to higher value material, and returned to the earth in the form of compost, mulch and fertiliser.
Adelaide Convention Centre installed Adelaide’s first WasteMaster in May 2023 to assist the venue with ongoing improvement in its food waste management.
Quantifiable Results
Since the initial installation in May 2023 WasteMaster has delivered significant results for Adelaide Convention Centre. This includes to date:
56 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill
19 tonnes of compost like residue produced
119 tonnes of CO2 eq reduction for the site
Positive Outcomes
A number of positive outcomes have been generated due to the installation of WasteMaster at Peninsula Palms:
Actively supporting Adelaide Convention Centre in achieving a 99% waste diversion to landfill rate.
Contributing to Adelaide Convention Centre’s EarthCheck Master certification and ongoing sustainability innovation.
WasteMaster has minimised Adelaide Convention Centre’s requirements for use of offsite commercial composters and reducing the transport of organics to off-site locations.
A much cleaner work area with reduced odour, less food waste and liquid spills.
